One of my juniors went through the selection process of IITB R.A for the year 2013. I am narrating the experience he had in his own words.
Selection Procedure
- First round was a written test with the following sections:
- General Aptitude
- Engineering Mathematics
- C/C++/Programming
- Other CS subjects
- About 50 students were selected from over 400 students for about 32 positions available with R.A.
- This was followed by interviews from the interview panels.
I appeared for two interview panels of institute RA - Sysdadmin and Application Software Cell (ASC). Here is the experience with each of them:
SysAdmin
- Questions on job experience.
- Basic and practical questions on networking protocols IP, UDP, TCP etc. For example which protocol is used in which application in practice.
- OS - What are binary and counting Semaphores?
- Linux -
- Basic Linux commands
- Simple shell script writing
- Linux file system architecture
Application Software Cell (ASC)
- Questions on job experience.
- Questions on DBMS Queries (asked to write queries for given scenarios)
- How web servers work?
Very good information. you also check Computer Science Homework Help that is very good for the CS students and help them during college days.

hi mh2753 that was a very informative article. I am an m tech CS aspirant and am preparing for GATE 2015. however i am not interested in the Teaching Assistantship (TA) that i will have to do after my selection to an IIT. Is TA compulsory? and does it really mean i have to literally give a lecture or do i simply have to check assignments, etc? (BTW i have done my MSc in environmental science)
ReplyDeleteyou dont have to actually lecture anyone...at most you will be asked to take vivas etc. for some btech students. you will also be required to help the profs in grading assignments/tests or other misc tasks. its not very difficult and i have not seen anyone having a lot of problems with TA work.
ReplyDeletethanks a lot sir. one more question is, i am switching over to an MTEch in computer science and engineering because my current qualification is MSc environmental science is proving fruitless in getting me a good stable job (also salary is very less). after my MTech CSE do you think i will be eligible for jobs in top software companies like microsoft, google, etc.? or do you think these companies will reject me for the other candidates with a Btech before their MTech? thanks.
ReplyDeletesome core companies like google/amazon/ibm(rl) etc. will only allow btech in CS. but a lot of companies will allow mtech in CS regardless of their qualifying degree for mtech. so you should be eligible for a lot of companies.
ReplyDeleteSir i scored AIR 74 . i am interested in Artificial Intelligence . i have also prepared a small reseach on AI .Which place have better Prof of AI . For me IIsc is better or IIts.
ReplyDeleteCongrates for the rank. The best way to know if an institute is good in a particular field or not is to browse through the profiles of Profs in that institute. You will get a fair idea of what they are working on. You can try to contact some existing students too to get more details.
ReplyDeleteI have air-4 in cs. i want cs in iitb. how many seats are allotted thru direct admission in iitb....i dont want to give the written test and interview again....to which other areas can i apply for mtech thru cs gate score?
ReplyDeleteCongrates for this wonderful rank.
ReplyDeleteThe IITB PG brochure does mention that they offer Direct Admission in M. Tech CS, but it does not mention how many. With AIR 4, I am pretty sure you must get a call for direct admit. Go through their brochure carefully and apply accordingly.
Also, IITK offers around 5 or so direct admits. Even that is a very good place for CS. You might want to consider them too, though I doubt you would need to.
I have heard IISc is a pretty good place for AI and ML. If you are good in theory and your math is sound, nothing beats being at IISc.
ReplyDeleteMy gate score 2014 is 564 and rank is 2497 and i m in SC category. Is there any chances to get IIT in their 3rd 4th list of interviews. Or NIT warangal or trichy?? Gate score is in CS
ReplyDeleteHello
ReplyDeleteMy AIR is 107. I have two questions.
1.)Among the IITs , where can I get direct admission for MTech in CS?
2) Interested in Wireless sensor networks- which IIT is suitable?
1) IITB (in last rounds), IITM, IITKGP (maybe IITD but I dont know what is their procedure now)
ReplyDelete2) Not sure since WSN is not my subject. I guess there were some good profs working on this at IITD. just check the faculty page. Dont know about other IITs.
Well, thanks for your answer.
ReplyDeleteIIT-D is having DA & interview for admission.
As an ex-student if IIT-D, can you give some general tips about IIT-D interviews for CS? Other than algorithms what subs are preferred?
Also , any idea of average closing rank for IIT-D direct admission?
I was a JCA student and not MCS. JCA interview is very simple and they only ask basic CS. For MCS, apart from Algo and DS, programming, n/w, maybe OS, would be the next important subjects, from what I have heard. IITD does not release the cutoff ranks for direct admits. they only inform the selected ones. so difficult to know.
ReplyDeletehello sir, my air rank in gate cs paper is 861,score 681,obc catagory.can i get admission in any iit?
