Cutoffs 2011




Finally the most sought after information in GATE world is here. The Holy Grail of all GATE related searches - Cutoffs for M. Tech CS in IITs (General Category)

Methodology

Unfortunately getting cutoffs for all courses in all IITs is not as simple as it sounds. This is because not all institutes announce their cutoffs. Some of them only display a list of shortlisted candidates on their website while some only send emails to the selected candidates. As such getting cutoffs for these institutes is not easy and one has to follow discussion forums or get in touch with candidates to know the cutoffs.

Interpretation


Although all IITs declare cutoffs in terms of score, I think the cutoff in terms of Rank is a better metric. This is because the seats at each IIT remain constant every year. Hence the rank wise cutoff for each IIT is almost constant year on year. In comparison, cutoff in terms of score, marks or percentile is dependent on the relative toughness of GATE exam that year, number of students appearing etc.

    i have 60% of aggregate in b.tech,do they consider b.tech aggregate in m.tech if so ,whether atleast iam eligible for the companies like ms,google,oracle or like any other heavenly companies..??

    they do give some weightage to btech score during mtech selection, but if you have very good GATE score, it should not be a problem.
    during placements too, the only eligibility criteria is Mtech CGPA, so there too it should not be an issue.

      Are u sure on this brother...? Bcoz i hav 67% in BE(CS), 80% in 12th, 91% in 10th. I am confident that i will get very good GATE score... I want just an oppurtunity in companies like MS, Google, Oracle... etc... If they shortlist only thro Mtech CGPA, then i am the happiest man..

    @ayan, and by the way, did you try for IITB RA. I think you can get it at your rank. Its not bad, it takes 3 years but in all other respects i have heard its same as Mtech CS in IITB.

    No,I did not try for IITB RA.And with previous years 537 rank I don't think I will be able to get anywhere as it was not good enough this year! Obviously this years (<=)537 ranked students(and,maybe more than that) will have better preference than me.Is not so?Reply.

    well thats right.

    anyways, this is what can happen, assuming that IITs still take students based on GATE scores:
    lets say the no. of students appearing for GATE is significantly lower this year. Then a person having, say, 300 or so rank will have the same score as you. In that case, you can get a very good seat. This is just a possibility.

    some companies like google, IBM Research and other research companies will consider your 12th percentage. they want consistent academic record. but i guess if you perform good during mtech, a lot of companies will consider you.

    @kk I have already read through most of your posts and know it depends on the individual choice but i was just asking you as you have gone to pursue Mtech with work exp...does that exp help you during placements and put you ahead?

    your experience does not help you to qualify for companies or for clearing written tests. It will definitely put a good impression at the time of interview. so yes, in a way, it will help. but do not expect to be given a higher package or better position because of your exp.

    @above, of course there is a lot of benefit for obc. in general the score cutoff for obc could be upto 10% less than that for general category.

    @above, if your GATE is in CS, then very difficult to get IIT. No idea about NITs. Also no idea about cutoffs ECE

    As far as i know, i think that M.Tech in any of the IITs is a far cry. Is there any chance for an MS admission in any of them?

    What are the opportunities one gets after an MS? Are they on an equal footing with the M.Tech programs?

    @abhivan, IITM MS closes around 1100, so very little chance for you. opportunities for MS are same as that for mtech

    Gate 2012 score is 425 with rank 8113.

    @swaroop, you do have a good chance of mtech. i dont know the exact cutoffs for obc, but apply to all places where cutoff for open is about 300 AIR.

    @anupam, i dont have cutoffs for obcs, but in general since your score is 657, you have a chance in any course that had upto 800 cutoff for general cat. last year.

    @sameer, i dont think your 67% in BE will matter that much as long as you have a really impressive mtech cgpa.

      no they dont. companies will typically shortlist based on your resume, but mostly they look at cgpa, though some companies might also take your BE % seriously, but such companies must be very few.

      thats nice.. How much package can i expect if i have good cpga, and taking my previous marks into consideration? bcoz now i am getting 4lacks/annum.. There is no use if i get 5-7 lacks/annum after doing MTech for 2 years..

      @sameer, you can expect higher than 5-7L if everything goes well, of course no one can guarantee it. My question to you would be, if you knew you will get *only* 7L after mtech, would you go for it?

      Yes, definitely.. My intention was will i be eligible for companies offering package more than 8-10 lacks...? since you told few companies ask for BE marks seriously(will the companies asking for BE fall into this category).. Reading at IIT is a very big prestige and previlage too..
