Is it worth doing Mtech at IITs

Ever since I graduated out of college in 2004 as BE Computer Science, I had this at the back of my mind that I have to do my masters, perhaps an M. Tech from IIT. I dont know how and why mtech got into my head, perhaps it was the dream of studying at IIT or that I was too scared to go to US for MS or had that kind of money. Then I joined a Software company and started my professional career.

But the more I worked for them, the more I realized that this is not the kind of work a computer scientist is supposed to do. This made my eagerness to go for m tech even stronger. Finally in 2008 I appeared for GATE, secured for myself a seat at IIT Delhi, left the well paying job and joined IIT delhi.

Believe me, making this decision of going for mtech while I was working for a software company was not easy at all. I had not seen anyone going for mtech in flesh and blood, so making an informed decision was very difficult. Then there is so much stigma against mtechs that convincing everyone around me (and myself) turned out to be very difficult. I realized that the only way of finding out whether its good for me or not, is to go for it. Besides I was fairly confident that however bad this mtech thing turns out to be, I will still get some job, at least as good as I had before mtech. So I thought, lets go for it.
The intention of this blog is to give you some information about aspects of doing mtech at IIT. I hope after reading this, one should be able to make a more informed decision.

Quality of Education

Most people think that quality of education in mtech is not as good as in btech. This is incorrect as the faculty (and facilities) for mtech and btech is the same. In fact even some of the courses done my btechs and mtechs are same and for some of the courses I have attended classes with the btech guys. So if the quality is good for them, its good for mtechs too. As far as my experience is concerned, this is the first time in my life that I have seen really good faculty. Faculty in my btech college was horrrible. Here in IITs I have studied from profs who have Phds from Stanford, Cornell etc. and some have experience of over 20 years in teaching or industry. Its a great experience to learn from such people, something I would have never got in any other college.

Expenditure

Mtech from IITs is cheap. Although the fees has gone up phenomenally this year, it is still cheap. I think it will cost about 35K per semester for mtech in IITs. This includes your tution fees, hostel fees, mess dues, etc. In this amount you get to live in a quality IIT environment, and get to use all the facilities like labs, sports facilities, internet etc. Plus you get a stipend of Rs. 8000 per month (i think this could increase this year). So that almost covers your fees. Compare this with doing MS in a US university or an MBA.

Work Load

Most people think mtechs dont have to study much and they can relax for 2 years. This is not entirely true though it could be partially true. Here's how: Courses in IITs can be divided into roughly two categories:

1) Courses that are really very good but at the same time extremely tough. It is very difficult to get a good grade in such courses but you learn a lot. It is in these type of courses that you get the real advantage of being at IIT.
2) Courses that are very easy but mostly useless. You can easily get a good grade in these courses without much effort but they will hardly do any value addition.

So if you mostly take easy courses in your mtech career, you can end up with a good CGPA without working hard at all. But then your mtech would be a waste and you will struggle to get a good placement. On the other hand, you can take the tough but good courses, you will learn a lot, but believe me, it becomes very hectic. These courses will make you work so hard that GATE studies will look like a piece of cake. But at the end, it will be worth it. Same logic applies to your choice of project. As such how tough or how easy your mtech is will depend on how much hard work you are willing to do. Unfortunately, most people take the useless easy courses, dont work hard at all during mtech and then say doing mtech in IITs was a bad idea.

Placements

This is the million dollar question, literally. People have this perception that after doing an mtech, the only thing you can do is teaching. I dont know about other branches, but this is certainly not true for mtech in computer science. In my batch itself mtech people got placed in Amazon, Adobe, Morgan Stanley, Oracle, Citrix, Cisco, Mircrosoft etc. Some of these companies hired more mtechs than btechs. Placement in IITs depend very much on your caliber than on anything else. Companies that come for campus allow a lot of people to appear for their written tests. So one gets an opportunity to appear for a lot of companies. But if you cant clear their written test or crack their interviews, there is nothing anybody else can do about it.

But there is a catch. There is no separate placement for mtechs and btechs. This means an mtech has to compete with btech for placements. But if you have done your mtech seriously you can still compete with them. A lot of mtech guys do get better placements than btechs.

Other prospects

Apart from placements, an mtech from IIT also stands a chance for getting into a reputed university abroad for Phd. You would need a high CGPA and a good recommendation from a prof. at IIT. Also, some guys who do good work in their project, get their work published in reputed scientific journals. So you get an opportunity to do some real contribution. Besides the option of teaching is always open. With so many engineering colleges mushrooming everywhere in the country, you always have an option to opt for teaching.

Conclusion

I would conclude by saying that mtech is good only if you are genuinely interested in Computer Science and research and willing to work really hard for next two years. Otherwise you are better off going for a job.

  7. Hi, wud you mind sharing your email id.. i wish to further consult with you to understand how realist wud it be for a guy like me to dream for IIT. I did B.Tech. from a very normal college in Cochin. I now work in USA, for last 10mths.. has lost touch with books rather than wrok related few topics. I wish to add IIT to my name. Its your email id that I need. Thx a lottttt.. super blog !!

  8. well for admissions to iit for mtech, the most important thing is a good GATE score. They will hardly care about your btech college or work ex. studying in USA could be difficult because you might not get all the books u need, but otherwise it only depends on how hard you try. as i have mentioned in the blog, if you find studying for gate too tough, its nothing compared to what you will have to study once you are in iit. so prepare yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  9. hi... this is ashish... am preparing for gate 2011... i have one doubt. my btech aggregate is 59%. if i get a good gate score is there any chance of doing mtech in iit's?? (as most of the iit's ask for a minimum of 1st class)

    ReplyDelete
  10. @ashish,
most iits do ask for 60% in btech. go thru the prospectus carefully to see what is their cutoff. in case you get a very good gate score, still apply to courses asking for 60%. there is slight possibility that they will consider it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. @mh2753,
as for now i checked out all the sites only IIT-D & IIT-B asked for 60%. In ths site's of IISc & IIT chennai they said that selection is purely based on gate score..

  14. Hi,

Thanx for this nice post. I have appeared in GATE 2011 in CS and I am expecting 60 out of 100 in the exam. I want to do Mtech since I want to be the part of R&D cells of leading SW companies like Google, Microsoft, Oracle. Can you suggest me which IIT will be better for me? or will ISI kolkata be an option?

    ReplyDelete
  15. @Amit,

I dont know much about ISI Kolkata, but mtech from IITs should give u opportunity to get into top s/w companies. i have done some comparison of iits in my first blog, u can have a look at it. otherwise, as far as placements are concerned, these companies come to all iits.

  16. hey really a wonderful blog. I have faced the same situation. after completing engg and joining IT comp. and finally I made a quit after 1 year in nov 2009. But couldn't score gud in GATE 2010 but this year expectations are high.... hey want to ask a question is there any problem u faced in placement because of gap in study as now I have gap of 3 years.......

    ReplyDelete
  17. @above,
I never had a 'gap'. I appeared for gate while working and resigned just before joining IIT. So my work ex was actually a big advantage for me.
Having a gap could be a problem but i don't think it should affect much. your performance in written test/interview and your work in iit will have a higher weightage during placements.

  18. Very encouraging article. I have an offer from Oxford for an MSc but they don't have the subjects I want to pursue - IIT does.

I wasn't sure whether it was the right choice to leave Oxford for IIT but this article definitely does encourage me to take this path without regrets.

  19. Some background about myself

I graduated from Bits, pilani in BE(Comp Science) with 8.0/10 last year. Currently working in a firm which pays well, but I have come to realise that I like bigger challenges. So, I have decided to pursue higher studies. I haven't applied for any of the foreign universities this year. However, I have a GATE Score of 939, that could get me admission to IITK/IITB ( i think). So, should wait for another year( changing to some other company say Amazon/microsoft/google etc.which pays equivalently but has better work) and applying to foreign universities next year? OR
    Join Mtech this year?

The Motivation behind doing Mtech here is to do good research (in 2 year programs, i don't want to waste 3 years with some Msc Research programs) and then apply for PhD to top universities..and go there..

Can you give your thoughts on my situation?

    ReplyDelete
  20. @rizwan

wow, this is a tough one. I cant do a direct comparison between US univs and IITs as i only know of IITs. I dont know how tough it is to get Phd admit without a masters, but i can tell you for sure that a good cgpa, and a good reco from a well know prof at iit should get you a very good university.

Mind you that mtech in IITs is more course oriented than research (except for IITK).So if your ultimate aim is research give a thought to MS too.

  21. Please help me. I am a final year student and already placed in a software firm with a good pay. I do really want to do a post graduation. I'm really scared of the financial backing required for doing a MS from a foreign university. I want to work for a couple of years and simultaneously prepare for GATE and then do Mtech in CS. Please please tell me whether if I do follow this plan, by the time I pass out from my Mtech will I end up at a higher position and salary then I would be without it? Sorry for the very money-oriented question but I'm a middle class Indian with loads of responsibility. Please help.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @nachiketn,
I dont know what is your current salary, but in most likelihood you can expect a salary of 6L to 12L (sometimes even more) after mtech in CS. but at the same time you will be earning only 10K per month for 2 yrs of your mtech. So take this into consideration.
Mtech is obviously much cheaper than MS in US. Its almost for free, in fact you can save some money.
So, in my opinion, from a financial point of view, mtech should get you at least at the same point after 4 years. Now it is up to you to decide.

  23. Hi,
Really nice post.I have question sir, please reply. I have done my BE from Electronics and communication after that i worked for s/w firm it gradually increased my interest towards computer science so i wrote GATE 2011 with CS/IT,am i eligible for applying for M.TECH with the various stream of computer science.
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  24. @above,
yes, most mtech CS courses (atleast in IITs) allow other stream BE/B.Techs to apply as long as they have GATE score in CS paper. Refer the prospectus of the institute to see what all branches are eligible for a particular course.

  25. Hi i am Ritika. Your blog is really great and it helped me a lot but there are some confusions and i was thinking that you might help me. I took GATE 2011 and got 7600 AIR which is not good enough for IITs. Now I am confused that i shud go for MTech or rather attempt for GATE 2012 and in the meanwhile get a job? What do you think wud be a better option. Also people around me tell me all the time that if you take a job you cant pursue studies as you will be thinking about making money. Does this ever happened to you?

    ReplyDelete
  26. @ritika,
you obviously cant go for mtech now, that is for sure. i think you should get a job and try for gate 2012. preparing for gate with job is difficult but it can be done.
in my case i didnt find any difficulty in going for studies after 4 years of job. in fact i was more enthusiastic about studies than people who came for mtech directly after btech since i had a 4 yr break from studies.

  27. Hi,

Nice blog. I am Nitin. I have got the admission offer from IITD & IITK both this year. Now I am confused about where shud I go? I have heard faculty at IITK is better than IITD & if u r into research then u shud go to Kanpur. But I am not sure about my future plans, wheather i'll go for phd or not. So what should I do? one more thing in one of ur blogs u have mentioned that we shud opt for good subjects not the easy ones. So what do u mean by that, how to decide on subjects in mtech? Thanks in advance. I am waiting for ur reply. and yes one last thing I m working for cisco ryt now. So i m opting for mtech over my job.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @Nitin
First of all congratulations for having such a nice problem.
Even I have heard that faculty at iitk is better than iitd, but i have no personal exp. of iitk. there is no doubt that iitk is very impressive.

btw, faculty at iitd is not bad either, and your chances of phd do not reduce very much by doing mtech at iitd.
as for how to choose courses during mtech, give highest weightage to faculty. once you join an iit, you will know the reputation of each prof.

  29. Hi,
I am Karttik.I did my b-tech from VIT,Vellore in Electronics and communication and passed out in 2010.I worked in TCS for 10 months and then i had to leave it due to some health reasons. Now instead of finding another company,I have channelised my energy for GATE 2012 with mathematics as subject as i love maths and i want to pursue research with mathematics as foundation.
sir,can u kindly tell me if Mtech in industrial mathematics/computer applications (these are the courses which gate qualified with mathematics take) from IITs will pay me rich dividends? What is the scope of doing MTech with these courses....As in i went through the course and i liked all the subjects therein...but i want to know can i make a career in mathematics??kindly enlighten me

thanks in advance.Your article was great and one of the most humble and frank articles i have read.

    ReplyDelete
  30. @kartik,

your main concern is can one make living out of research in maths. this is something difficult for me to answer as i am from a different field.

about computer applications at iit delhi. if you do this course you can take your courses from maths dept at iitd and do some good project work under a maths prof. there are a few great profs in maths dept at iitd. if you manage to do good here possibly you can then go for a phd in some good university abroad. but iitds maths dept is not the best and if this is what you want to do you should probably look at iitk or iisc banglore.
my guess is that you would at least need a phd if you really want to have a career related to maths. but as i said, take my opinion with a pinch of salt as i do not belong to maths field.

if you ask me about the placement options of these maths based courses, you will most likely end up getting placed in a software company. the package will be good but thats not what you want. for that you could very well do mtech in ECE

  33. @anonymous, your school/college scores should not be a problem as long as you get a good CGPA at iit during mtech except for a few companies like IBM IRL/google etc. most companies will not care

    ReplyDelete
  34. @gate,

this is a good question. one word answer to your query is yes. i am satisfied. i have now moved up from service based companies to core tech based companies like amazon. this is what i wanted. it would have been difficult to do this otherwise (or at least very difficult).
besides, i have learnt a lot of things during mtech. doors for phd have opened for me too.
my only regret is that i should have gone for mtech earlier instead of wasting 4 yrs in a service based company. but anyways, things worked out well in the end.

  35. Hello,
First of all; excellent post. If compliments were dollars Id give you a billiom... :). I want your opinion regarding something. I have done my BTech(CSE) with CGPA of 7.7, completed this year. I was recruited on campus in CSC(Computer Science Corporation). It being a service sector industry, I'm more inclined towards working for a product based Start Up company and have a few interviews lined up.
I have been pondering over doing M Tech for quite some time and will go for it the next year. What are your views regarding this?

    ReplyDelete
  36. @Sush,

Thanks so much for your complements.
As for your situation, mtech vs. job is very subjective. if you are planning to work for start ups, mtech will be good, but if you get a startup now itself without mtech, then perhaps you dont need it.
whether it will be good for you or not, nobody can tell apart from you. i just want that people should be able to make informed decision when they want to go for mtech. i would suggest that go for mtech only if you are willing to study hard for 2 yrs, in research mode.

  40. I have done my engineering in EC and I want to do mtech in CS from IIT delhi, currently I m working with IBM from last 3 months,How difficult it will be in preparation of gate with cs,and plz tell the placements after mtech in IIT

    ReplyDelete
  41. @deepika
gate in CS with a background in EC should be doable. But considering that you are also working might make it tougher, though a lot will depend on how good your CS basics are.
make sure you prepare the base well, since once you get into iit delhi, there wont be any time for this.

i have mentioned placements in this post. placement stats are also mentioned in http://mtech-admission-iits.blogspot.com/2011/01/jca-computer-applications-at-iit-delhi.html
this is for jca and placement for mcs is even better. a lot of my mcs juniors have got into google, MS, intel, amazon etc. so that should not be a worry once u r in iit delhi.

  45. @above,

definitely its possible. i think you have to take the GATE exam in CS. Most IITs allow a lot of branches to take Mtech in CS as long as their GATE score is in CS. But all IITs have different rules so check prospectus for the fine print.

as far as i know, this should not affect your chances if u get a good gate score. iits only look at your final BE percentage, gate score and interview performance. some iits/departments could be an exception though, but mostly this should not be a problem.

    greetings
sir, I am a 2010 Grad, I had little or no opportunities to attend campus placements, mostly because I had 57 % in 12th standard though my BE marks stand good.
I am now pursuing a job oriented course but when I discuss with my friends the job market is nothing which I thought it would be, there is no "computer science" there, just well trained people doing a constant job.
In my training too, I just formulated an algebraic equation, & realizing that my BE only worth a stupid equation, I really don't want to pursue this anymore, what should I do, please do suggest, I am frustrated & hell lot confused.

    ReplyDelete
  52. @sushant,

well you are right to some extent, there is very less "computer science" out there. this is usually true of the service based companies that hire in bulk.

i would suggest you join any company for now. work for a year or something and then switch to a better one. you can repeat this till you are happy with where you are. or you can try for MS or Mtech after a year or two.

remember the work you do now will be more important than what you learned/did during engg. if you do good work it will not go unnoticed.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @above,

well if you get a good score and get a seat at IIT, i dont think it should make that big a difference.

3.had all your batchmates got placed in campus placements other than the students opted for research..?
4.i hardly heard that students from iit`s are not placed...is it so?

thanks for you complements. Here are my answers:
Q1&2: I only know about IITs or NITs. I have no idea about the teaching quality and placement scenario for other institutes. Maybe they are good, but i have no information.
Q3&4: Of course all my batch mates got placed. Look at the placement record for JCA here: http://mtech-admission-iits.blogspot.com/2011/01/jca-computer-applications-at-iit-delhi.html

    here are my answers:
    1. with this score you will get calls for iitk written test, iitkgp councelling, iitg/iitr and iitd jca. in my opinion, the best option for you is to crack iitk. that is followed by jca@iitd. read through my posts http://mtech-admission-iits.blogspot.com/2010/02/mtech-admissions-in-iits-so-you-really.html

    4. the same as gate but mostly algo, DS, programming, OS, n/w
    5. no.

considering that you got AIR 318 in 2011, i think you should target an AIR of < 150 this year. If you manage to get that, you have a shot at every iit.

  62. Hi...

    The post was really useful..

I've completed my B.Tech (EEE) at 2009 with 9.4 CGPA. Working in a support project with TCS for the last two years.. I'm really good at programming and also more inclined towards comp. sci subj than electrical (my coll. major).. Since, I was forcefully allocated to a support proj. and my coding skills are being wasted, I desperately want to get inside prog. line.. So, I came to a conclusion that I can do M.Tech (CS) at IITs.. Was searching about it.. That's how I came across your fine blog.. Thanks for it..

    Need few more info..

    1. Pls write an another blog stating how to prepare rigorously for GATE when we are working with some company.. Esp. give some useful hints about preparing for GATE(CS) coming from B.Tech (EEE) branch..

I'm from middle class family.. So, have some edu. loan to repay and also some financial commitments are there. So, I desperately need to improve my current financial state and also don't want to waste my coding skills. I'm good at academics at all level ( School as well as college). Since, I find comp. sci subjects are more easy to grasp and apply than the electrical, I would like to switch over to CS dept.

So, doing M.Tech (CS) at IITs after doing B.Tech (EEE) is the only way I can find now. Pls do help me out by giving your useful suggestions for my GATE preparation.

And also, pls mention the IITs that are having best CS dept if you have any such opinion.

  63. @above,

since i am not an EE student myself, i cant tell you how an EE student should prepare for gate CS.

your decision for going for mtech is useful if you consider that your coding skills are getting wasted. basically that was the reason why i went for mtech too. but you need to decide whether you are taking too much risk, giving up a job and going for mtech, considering your financial situation. it is something only you can decide.

mostly iitk, iitd and iitb are good for CS, but it also depends on you topic of interest. not all iits are good in all CS subjects.

  64. Hello,

I did BE in Mech(was Not really my interest) with very moderate academics and since then working in IT industry for last few years. But I am very much interested and involved in CSE and planning to do MTech in CSE from IITS.

My question is whether my academics(aggregate 69.5%) as Mech will hinder in getting admission in IITs or say getting placed into superpowers like google etc..

    Thanking you in advance.

  65. @rangs,

some companies like amazon, ibm rl, google etc. will ask for btech in CS. so that way you might not be eligible for some of the good companies. others should not have a problem. as far as your percentage is concerned, i dont think it will matter. companies put a very high weightage on your performance in iit, and as long as that is good, they can ignore this.

  66. Hi mh2763,

I have done my BE in Information technology from state government college.........i was very well versed in technicals but in 3rd year of BE i landed up making up my mind for MBA (even though i dont like MBA at all)
I listened to my seniors who said that MBA is best when you are having 2 or so years of workex, so i tried for job after BE and got the expected job in finance sector IT company from campus placements (as i was planning for doing MBA from finance )
I am currently having experience of nearly 7 months and will be having experience of 2 years when i will join any of the mba college...........now as of now my MBA portion is strong enough to get me percentile in the range 90+ (as per my performance in CL mock tests==>if luck doesn't fails me) with 10 months spare.
But why iam here is that i still don't like MBA at all.
It looks to me that i am going to cheat peoples with the managerial attitude with no technical stuff in place to which i will be working and plus my all the technical knowledge will go in vain which i had studied in my BE.
I appeared for GATE 2012 this year and as per the IES made easy answers i will be landing up with rank around 5000-6000 that too without any preparation (thanks to my 4 years of BE).
Now there comes my mind shift.
Yesterday night i asked myself 3 questions---
--What am i doing (doing job in service sector company for money where there is no research work for me and all the technical stuff is of waste)
--What i want to do (to work with really technical stuff and which utilizes my technnical subjects in my work)
--Can i get success in what am i thinking (i guess i can make it to IIT's if i prepare for 1 hard year )

Please suggest me as iam in a position half way to MBA and thinking forward for Mtech from an IIT.

** please pardon me for such a long post but i found it hard to manage in this also.
** please dont laugh at my silly question (its not in my hand to control it)

    Thanks a lot in advance.

  67. Sorry......forgot to mention 1 thing
--Am working with an IT company in a project in support.

I like coding and development stuff but as i am in support i usually have no chance to hands on in any coding stuff
    +
I got training in Unix and DB2 ( apparantly no chance to do coding stuff if you are in support )
    +
I usually do stuffs like calling clients area (which is an Investment bank in my case) if any issue comes up and dropping mails to higher level operations team and at times I used to think what am i doing as an engineer (i know it gives an impression like a clerk but its true)

Some of my friends are in TCS and they are too reeling with the same ailment.
The worst part is that they got the training in JAVA like stuff and currently working on a support project on UNIX ==> What a paradigm shift :(

Yes its true that these companies pay really well, but then the main thing comes =====> Are you enjoying what you do??
    I do not..

Please please please please help me out of the dilemma in GATE VS MBA at this time when i have already prepared half way to MBA.

    Thanks much.

  69. @above,

reading thru your post, i get the feeling that you are mainly interested in technical side but you went for mba line only because you thought that is good for your career. in general i always say that mba vs mtech is a personal choice and is completely dependent on your interests. the only confusion most people have, including you, is that will they waste their career if they go for mtech. this is what i try to explain in this blog that doing mtech from iits gives you ample opportunities in terms of research, placement or phd options.

now that you know what opportunities are available in mtech and mba, and you know your technical and managerial capabilities, i think you should be able to make this decision yourself. the only purpose of this blog is to make sure people make an informed decision instead of relying on hearsay.

    hope that answers your question.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @aditya, foreign placements do happen. two of my batch mates were placed in tokyo.

whether you get the same amount of respect as btech or not, that is a tough question to answer. a lot of top tech companies do hire mtechs, so i am guessing they respect them. if you are talking about public perception of mtech vs btech, i dont think anybody can answer this

  76. Hi there, nice post!

I've appeared in GATE 2012 CS and nearly sure to be in Top 100 with 75.33 marks. I want to ask a question regarding PSUs v/s M.Tech@IIT/IISc. IOCL is offering 9LPA CTC (I'm not selected yet but applied for), and I need a Job too for some reasons. But will it be beneficial for me to pursue M.Tech in IITs/IISc or to go for the job.
    Some info:
    Placed in TCS@3.16LPA CTC
    I'm a very bright student with 85.4% in B.Tech.
1 research paper@IEEE (in 3rd year), currently working on 2nd. Have a keen interest in Data Structure, Algorithms, DIP, Parallelism.

But due to family circumstances, Job is also a priority!

    Waiting your valueable comments!

  77. @sumit, well if you have family reason to go for a job, what can I say. mtech vs job is a highly personal decision and depends on a lot of factors. whether mtech will be beneficial for your or not depends on what you want in life.

I want to ask u abt Exam structure in IIT's. Uptil I had a habit of referring few last year paper for BE exam. Bcoz most of the question used to come from previous year paper. Is it same for IIT ? IIT exam paper r same like BE exam paper ? ( eg.90% theory and 10% problem ) I hate to write theoretical question of 3-4 pages. I can't mug up long answers.
And main question is there any leave before exam ( like we used to get 15-20 days before exam + 3-4 days after each paper)
    Thanx in advance.

    1. @Tushar,

at IITs its 100% practical and 0% theory. never faced a descriptive question in the 4 sems of mtech. some profs do repeat questions, but such questions are usually very tough.

there is a few days leave before the exams, but exams are very hectic in general (like 5 minors in 2 days or 4 major exams in 3 days, so buckle up)

As far as i know, iits consider your qualifying degree percentage. so for you they should consider your mca percentage. just verify this from information brochure of iit you apply to. also, this should not be a big problem for placements.

      Delete
  104. Their Webpage also says that they consider throughout academic excellence. But your suggestions regarding admissions in previous comments do not take that into consideration. So does that mean that IITs are concerned with only your GATE score and a minimum eligibility or can a lower GATE score get a preference purely on the basis of his academic record and similarly can my application be ruled out because of my academic record?

    1. @sidharth,

      Have you read this:
      http://mtech-admission-iits.blogspot.com/2012/03/my-experience-with-m-tech-after-job.html

It should not make any difference as such. The only thing is, if you do job for a couple of years, you are in a better position to decide for yourself, as to what is better for you. It does not make any practical difference during placements but having work ex definitely puts a good impression during interviews.

  129. Thank you siggharth, thanks for the motivation.....actually i have a same spirit for Mtech in CS from iit/iisc. and teaching is not only my aim but want to involve in research activities after mtech like phd and more like this.
I am also doing job rite now and preparing for GATE 2013.

  130. i suggest you go for work for some time, get to know the IT environment and it's ways, work in different sections regardless of the package, and you will know where your caliber lies. if you still feel that there's something missing, that you need to know more or learn more during your work, then opt for an m.tech as you are ready to work hard for it as you now know what exactly you want.

  132. Hello sir, I am already pursuing my M tech on the basis of GATE score in a reputed university of India. I want to appear in GATE 2013 with the double enthusiasm and zeal as GATE is my passion as of now. What will you suggest about forthcoming opportunities for me? Although I am damn crazy for IIT's

  133. Same here buddy! We are on the same boat! Lets wish best of luck to each other :)

  134. I am an M.Tech(CS) from IIT Kgp working for Adobe. My package is far above that of my friends who went for job after B.Tech.
If you work hard(need not be as hard as suggested here.. but if you can, you will learn a lot) enough and have a decent CGPA (>7.5) which is not difficult to score, you can land a very high paying job. Companies test mainly a candidate's skills in Programming, Data structures and Algorithms. You need to be good at that to land a good job.

  136. Dear Sir,
I really apperitate your work which has helped hundreds of aspirants aiming for higher studies at IIT. Presently I am studying CSE in private college. I want a to join a MNC. My question to you is that is it possible to land in MMC after completing my M.tech from IIT with good marks.
Secondly, which IIT is best for Cse.

  141. Hello Sir,

I have average academics(10--83%,12--81% Btech--8.2/10) .Also i have not done any great project during my Btech.I would like to know if i work hard perform during Mtech(at IIT's) is it possible for me to land a job in top tier tech company or do they look at performance throught the career and i would be at a disadvantage because of my Btech? Please reply.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Hi, your academics is not that bad.

This should be enough for almost all companies provided you do good work in M. Tech and maintain a good CGPA.

    ReplyDelete
  143. oh ..Thnx a lot Sir.and about Btech projects(one i hve done i feel is useless )but if i manage to do good projects during Mtech will the project done during Btech matter a lot or not..???

Sir, your blog is very good. You almost cleared all my doubts. I am awaiting my 12th result. After that I want to do B.Tech from IP University. After B.Tech, I hope to clear GATE and join M.Tech program at one of the IITs. I just want to ask if I will be eligible to work at Google. Do Google conduct on-campus recruitment for M.Tech students.

Working at Google is my biggest dream.

Keep up the good work sir.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Yes, Google does come to IITs for campus for M. Tech students :)

    ReplyDelete
  146. Sir does having done btech from ip university orvany other institute of the same standard narrows chance of getting good placement at mtech in iit. By good placements, i mean google, microsoft, amazon, adobe etc.
    Thank you in advance sir

    ReplyDelete
  147. I dont know much about IP univ. but i dont think your btech matters much. of course these things are decided by the company and nobody can tell what criteria they use, but i think if you do well in mtech, these things should not matter.

I got 1184 rank in ece.according to last year cutoff I may get cse in nit trichy.is it ok for an ece student to do mtech in cse? Will there be any problems at time of placements?

    ReplyDelete
  152. a lot of ece students do mtech in cse and get placed in good companies. some core companies like Google, IBM IRL, Amazon etc. may not consider you for placement, but otherwise there should not be any problem.

  156. Hi sir..great blog ..have a query ..have done BE in Electrical n Electronics ..now working in a software company(JAVA development)..would it be possible for me to get into Mtech in CS in IITs?..Thanks in advance :)

    ReplyDelete
  157. i think it should be possible...you will get all eligibility details in PG brochure of IITs. Go through it to find out which streams are eligible for which courses.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Sir ,with due reguards , i want to ask you a serious question . I am studying computer sc & tech , btech from jadavpur univ, kolkata , w.b. , But, i am much interested in the subject named "Robotics" from any Nit/IITs, can i opt for the robotics / electronics in any nit / iits after scoring a high rank in the GATE exam ? My email ld is ishaniroy3@gmail.com . Pls email me ..... thank u sir ....

    ReplyDelete
  159. i dont think there is a separate branch for robotics, but a lot of iits have some research going on in this field. if you get into an iit (or niit), you can choose to work with a prof who is doing research in robotics. this way you will get exposure in that field.

  160. Hello Sir I have a problem that is in previously i have a gap of 5 years in education due to financial condition but things are better now i continued my studies and expect graduation 2014 also a company offered me a job but i am not interested in that kind of job i have a dream to join iit's . so i have to drop a year for preparation. would that affect my chances for getting job after mtech. what are the possibilities? thank you in advance and what are you doing these days

    ReplyDelete
  161. if you take a drop for preparation, and then do your mtech form iit, it should not affect your chances for placement. But if you take a drop and are unable to get into iit, then there would be a problem. i would suggest that you can take up the job and start preparing side by side. if the job is not really tough, preparing along with it should not be impossible, if you start now.

I have worked for Amazon for 3 years after mtech. currently working with Oracle.

    ReplyDelete
  162. hello sir.I completed my BE(cs) in 2012.i am applying gate exam for last 2 year and i have no work experience.i want to ask about so this will affect admission and placement in mtech in iit.
and also preparing for IIIT,BITS,VIT exam will affect admission and placement in mtech in iit after 2 year of gap and no job.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Thanks a lot for the information.I really in need of such an article

    ReplyDelete
  164. One more thing i want to ask..
i am quite interested in pursuing specialization in machine learning.
Could you please suggest me the best iit for this course..

    ReplyDelete
  165. Not sure. When I was at IIT Delhi, there wasnt much of Machine learning there, but I dont know what is the situation now. Just go through the faculty list of CS dept of each IIT and see how many profs are working on Machine learning.

    ReplyDelete
  166. Is it worth it to go for mtech in IITD or I could continue to prepare for PSUs/UPSC?

    ReplyDelete
  167. I am in 3rd year,i am planning to start my m.tech preparations right now but, one of my relative says that i should do some job as soon as i pass out.he says that even though if i resign within 1 month it'll be good for my profile if i fail to get into some good institute for m.tech.what should i do?

    ReplyDelete
  168. i dont really get you. probably what you are saying is that you want the option of job open when you are doing mtech studies, so that you have a backup. that is ok. try for both job and mtech, and if you get both, you can decide later what you want to do.
